International Parrotlet Society

The International Parrotlet Society was founded in 1992 to educate its members and the public on the proper care, maintenance, breeding, exhibition, conservation, promote veterinary research and preservation of all three genera of parrotlets both in captivity and in the wild. IPS is non-profit corporation and an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) educational charitable organization and all donations to the Society are tax deductible.

Joining IPS would help you immensely in educating yourself on these unique and wonderful little parrots. IPS  will not only help you find quality breeders from which to buy parrotlets but will help breeders sell them as well. IPS  is not just for breeders, however. Just about half of IPS's membership are strictly pet owners. IPS is the oldest and largest parrotlet society in the world. IPS produces a fantastic bimonthly journal that contains full color cover photograph of a different species, subspecies or mutation of parrotlets on each issue. Articles are written by veterinarians, researchers, biologists, parrotlet breeders, owners, behaviorists, nutritionists, government officials and other experts to advise our members on all aspects of parrotlet keeping and care whether it is pet ownership, breeding, exhibition or conservation.

Classified advertising is available to members at very low cost as well as commercial businesses for very reasonable rates. Ads are published both in our journal and on our web-site. Each member receives a Membership Breeders Directory at no charge. IPS also has a free traceable banding system with data going back to the Society's inception, which allows people to get in contact with the breeders of their parrotlets. We also sell registered, traceable society-issued IPS bands to members that are recognized by the Society of Parrot Breeders and Exhibitors, which allows IPS members to accrue points at SPBE bird shows.

IPS strongly supports conservation and sponsors breeding cooperatives for the very rare Mexican and Yellow Face parrotlets. You must be a member of the Society in order to participate.

IPS believes that all parrotlets are important not just the rare species and mutations. That is why IPS has a  Parrotlet Placement Program to place parrotlets that need new homes in good, safe, permanent homes with our members. IPS places parrotlets for anyone in need, however, you must complete and return the Donor Agreement before they can place the parrotlet. Also, in order to adopt a parrotlet from the Program, you must be a member of IPS and sign and return the Care Giver Agreement.

IPS meets twice a year at the National Cage Bird Show and the American Federation of Aviculture convention. IPS has several hundred members in many countries around the world and is one of the biggest and most respected avian specialty organizations in the world. In fact, IPS raised more than $3,000 for avian medical research at Texas A & M University for the study of Avian Gastric Yeast (formerly known as megabacteria). This contribution helped lead to a greater understanding of the organism and will continue to contribute to find new and more effective methods of treatment.

IPS, as an educational charity, also sponsors speakers at various avian educational seminars and conventions both nationally and internationally. This helps support aviculture in general and parrotlets specifically and furthers our mission statement to educate the public on proper parrotlet care and conservation.

IPS also believes in exhibiting parrotlets and has issued Exhibition Standards by which all parrotlets in the United States are judged. These Standards have been adopted by both the Society of Parrot Breeders and Exhibitors and the North American Parrot Society. In addition, IPS also presents Best Parrotlet and Best Novice Parrotlet in Show awards at both the Great American Bird Show and National Cage Bird Shows. IPS also offers clubs and avian businesses to host an IPS Specialty Parrotlet Show with various levels of awards for parrotlet exhibitors. These shows may be held in conjunction with other birds shows as IPS works in conjunction with the Society of Parrot Breeders and Exhibitors and the North American Parrot Society to use their certified judges to judge parrotlets.

IPS is affiliated with the American Federation of Aviculture, Bird Clubs of America, Society of Parrot Breeders and Exhibitors, North American Parrot Society, National Cage Bird Show, Great American Bird Show and several international parrotlet clubs such as the Nederlandse Forpussen Club.
