Spectacle Parrotlet (Forpus conspicillatus conspicillatus)
Spectacle parrotlets are at the small end of the scale weighing around 25
grams and less than five inches in length. Males are a deep, rich evergreen with a bright
violet-blue eye ring, rump, primary and secondary coverts, primaries, secondaries and
under wing coverts. Females are not as dark green as the males and also have an eye ring
however it is emerald green not blue. Both males and females have horn-colored beaks and
legs. Spectacles are the only parrotlets with a true eye ring. They are also quite
prolific and relatively easy to breed which has made them recently available to the pet
market. They have spunky, fearless personalities and are very sweet and affectionate.
Spectacle Parrotlet (Forpus conspicillatus caucae)
In this sub species the bill is more prominent than in the nominate. In the males
the blue is less violet than in the nominate.
Spectacle Parrotlet (Forpus conspicillatus metae)
In this sub species the eye-ring is much reduced than in the nominate. The males
are a brighter and more yellowish-green, and the throat and cheeks are a bit more
yellowish than the nominate. The females are generally a bit more yellowish than their
nominates.
