We started showing our parrotlets in 1996, beginning with our pet "PJ". While he did win a ribbon or too, it was really our first half-hearted try at showing birds. It is ironic that we have "returned" to showing birds as that is how we found parrotlets in the first place in 1983 when we were attending a local bird show. As we were going through the parrot division we saw these tiny, adorable parrots and wondered what the heck they were, but we knew that they sure were cute as the dickins! It took us almost two years to locate our first breeding pair and since then we became hooked on parrotlets. We encourage everyone to attend a bird show where the birds are judged on their quality and you will get quite an education. Showing your parrotlets helps determine differences in breeding stock and promote the healthiest birds possible. After all, in most bird shows there will be birds that you have never seen in person. It is quite an experience to look a bird face to face instead of a color picture in a book! We show at many local shows in California and have taken several parrotlets to both the Great American Bird Show as well as the National Cage Bird Show. Our parrotlets won a record nine Best Novice awards as well as both American Federation of Aviculture awards for Best Bird Bred and Banded by an AFA Member at the Great American and the Nationals in 1997.In 1998, we were very lucky at shows. We had one male Blue Wing become champion and grand champion within a week. The same bird then went on to become the top winning parrot in the country with the Society of Parrot Breeders and Exhibitors. This year, we intend to show many parrotlets at shows all over the West and at the Great American in Wisconsin and the National Cage Bird Show in Puerto Rico. We are working very hard with the International Parrotlet Society to one day have parrotlet divisions at shows all over the country as well as the Great American and National Cage Bird Shows. |
